Frequently Asked Questions About Measure SFS

What is Measure SFS?
To repair deteriorating roads and fix potholes, the City Council voted to place Measure SFS, a parcel tax measure of 7¢ per square foot on commercial properties and 3½ ¢ per square foot on industrial properties and vacant lots on the November 5, 2024 ballot.

Why do we need Measure SFS?
A 2021 road study, conducted by independent engineers, found more than 50% of Santa Fe Springs roads to be in poor or fair condition, requiring over $100 million in repairs.

This same study found that 18-wheeler trucks and commercial vehicles are major factors in the deterioration of local roads. The cost of fixing city roads will only get more expensive the longer we wait, and in the meantime, potholes and deteriorating road increase wear and tear on vehicles and make it harder for City residents to comfortably drive around Santa Fe Springs.

How much would Measure SFS raise each year and what could it fund?
Measure SFS would provide approximately $6,000,000 in annual funds that can be used by the City exclusively for road repair and maintenance projects. These projects will allow the City to:

  • Fix deteriorating roads
  • Repair potholes and curbs
  • Keep major industrial roads and arterial streets in good condition
  • Protect groundwater
  • Improve traffic flow

Measure SFS does not create any new taxes for either homeowners or renters.

How can we be sure funding from Measure SFS would be spent as voters intended – for our local roads only?
Measure SFS would require strict accountability provisions, including:

  • Creation of an citizens’ oversight committee
  • Public spending disclosure and annual financial audits
  • The measure would expire after 25 years

Do business owners support Measure SFS?
Yes! Measure SFS was drafted in consultation with the Chamber of Commerce and other community stakeholders.

Will homeowners or renters have to pay additional taxes?
No. Measure SFS is a dedicated, locally controlled parcel tax measure, paid for by owners of commercial, industrial and vacant lots.

Can the State or federal governments access this funding?
No. By law, every penny must stay in Santa Fe Springs for repair and restoration of our roads. None of these funds can be taken or redirected by the State or federal governments.

Where can I get more information about the Election (i.e. polling locations, voter registration, etc.)?

What level of support does Measure SFS need to pass?
Measure SFS needs to be supported by 67.7% of voters for it to pass. All registered voters living in the City of Santa Fe Springs are eligible to vote on the measure on the November 2024 ballot.
